In the HTML5 spec, data-* attributes have been added to associate data to elements:
In jQuery, the data() method allows developers to associate data to elements and retrieve it.
And now... "with your powers combined..."
- <div data-patchlocation="github" data-awesome="true" data-testcount="28" />
- $( div ).data( 'patchlocation' ) // "github"
$( div ).data( 'awesome' ) // true
$( div ).data( 'testcount' ) // 28
Proper JSON is supported, too:- <div data-details='{"authors": ["paul irish","andrée hansson"], "prop": "html5"}' data-cacherules="everythingaroundme"/>
- var details = $( div ).data( 'details' );
details.authors[ 1 ] ; // "andrée hansson"
// also, internal data cache preferred over DOM
$( div ).data( 'cacherules' , 'DOLLA DOLLA' );
$( div ).data( 'cacherules' ) // "DOLLA DOLLA"
This feature to data() is also proposed as a replacement to the metadata plugin .

Worth noting:- The elem.dataset API (from HTML5), currently unimplemented anywhere, camelcases based on hyphens and such. This data() api does not.
- The spec says " Authors of libraries that are reused by many authors are encouraged to include their name in the attribute names, to reduce the risk of clashes. For example, a library called "DoQuery" could use attribute names like
data-doquery-range, and a library called "jJo" could use attributes names likedata-jjo-range." Requiring authors to prefix all data attr's with 'jquery-' is bit much to me, so this doesn't enforce such a thing. - Because JSON requires double quotes around keys, they must either be escaped or single quotes should be used for the data-* attribute value.
I've had various iterations of this for quite a while and think this is the strongest, but I'm eager to hear everyone's feedback. What do ya'll think about it heading into core?
Since querySelectorAll has native support for :focus to find the
focused element, does it make sense to add support for the older
browsers? I can tell you that this is a common request on #jquery.

document.activeElement); }
This works in ie6+, ff3+, chrome2+, saf4+, opera9+, both with and
without qSA.
So the question is: is adding this worth the non-compatibility with
FF2, Chrome1, and Safari 3? Something that can be resolved through
proper documentation, perhaps.
Also, AFAICT, only the elements that support tabindex work with this
filter:
A, AREA, BUTTON, INPUT, OBJECT, SELECT, and TEXTAREA.
Despite it being TOTALLY AWESOME, using themeroller and dropping it
into production work isnt doesn't *just work* like many would like,
but with a little more care and thought around the generated CSS it
creates, I think we could get somewhere good.
There are some common problems with the tabs and datepicker css...
among others.

Are there any plans to add the source of themeroller to the jquery ui
svn tree? I'm sure we could fill in some patches to quickly tighten up

I added some fun infinite scroll functionality to my employer's blog.
http://molecularvoices.molecular.com/
All of it is based on a $(document).scroll() event that doesn't seem
to fire in IE6 or 7. My alert() debugging shows that IE won't enter
into the function attached to the scroll event..
You can test on the above link.
