I had the same problem when adjusting history/remote plugin to 
www.antemeridiemdesign.com (there, in occident and orient moods, all 
pages are being loaded via the aconite plugin).
Everything worked fine but the return to start page, so I ended up 
adding '#index' to the location upon entering the site (I'm pretty sure 
Klaus will come up with a more elegant solution, though). After that you 
need a bit of tweaking inside $.ajaxHistory.
On the abovementioned site, js files are consolidated and optimized, so 
if you'd want to have a look, let me know, I'll put on the original file.
I haven't got the Safari part of $.ajaxHistory working, haven't had time 
yet.
