Karel-Jan, this is very nice! Exactly how I would improved the three if I had more time!
I'd love to work with you from there to get it contributed back to jQuery UI, if you're interested. I've looked into the source a bit, and the most important stuff to do right now is to get IE6/7 working (I know that sucks), and we have to get as much of jQuery's selectors out of the sort function as possible, because every speed improvement here is needed.
