Thanks Brandon for your assistance. I've answered my own question,
for those faced with the same problem it's simple.
after the click and dialog calls, I added:
$("a#mtd").click(function() {
$("#mtd_dialog").dialog("open");
return false;
});
Works perfect everytime now.
