  <p>The function read() is used with input streams, and reads
  <em>num</em> bytes from the stream before placing them in
  <em>buffer</em>. If <strong>EOF</strong> is encountered, read()
  stops, leaving however many bytes it put into <em>buffer</em> as they
  are.</p>

  <p>For example:</p>
