  <p>The free() function deallocates the space pointed to by
  <em>ptr</em>, freeing it up for future use. <em>ptr</em> must have
  been used in a previous call to <a href="malloc.html">malloc</a>(),
  <a href="calloc.html">calloc</a>(), or <a href=
  "realloc.html">realloc</a>(). An example:</p>
