https://drafts.csswg.org/css-pseudo/#first-letter-styling / https://drafts.csswg.org/css-pseudo/#first-line-styling doesn't document very well why those properties were chosen. Also the fact that it leaves a lot of wiggle room to user agents is an interoperability issue.

Similarly, https://drafts.csswg.org/css-pseudo/#placeholder-pseudo isn't clear as to why the first-line properties apply to it.
