I too was sad that this did not work.  I had to turn something elegant:

```
.nav ol li.active ~ .indicator {
  transform: translateX(calc(70px * calc(counter(list-item) - 1)));
}
```

into a whole string of hideous and fragile:


```
.nav ol li:nth-child(0).active ~ .indicator {
  transform: translateX(calc(70px * 0));
}
    ... cases 1..11 here ...

.nav ol li:nth-child(12).active ~ .indicator {
  transform: translateX(calc(70px * 12));
}
```
