That real example from the spec might not show a realistic use case but it is very illustrative to form a valid mental model. I missed something like that in the respective section in CSS Images actually, and did not think of checking Borders. 🤦♂️ However, seeing an one-dimensional border with discrete colors there made me miss a fading variant even more. Since gradients and box shadows are popular to achieve similar effects, perhaps also adding _that_ to `<1D-image>` alongside `stripe()` – yes, please drop the plural _s_ while you still can! – is what would finally get this implemented, understood, taught and used.
