I just tried to watch some presentation videos from Wikimania.
Some had very weak sound, some had no sound in the first minutes,
some only played the first minute and then stopped. I don't think
the Wikimania videos are unique in having such problems. Video is
new to Commons, and the expert contributors are more familiar with
still images.
How can we learn to make better videos? Are there some good
instructions? Perhaps a free instruction video (Wikibooks, but a
video instead of a book) on how to produce good videos is what we
need. In fact, the English Wikibooks has a title on "Video
Production", http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Video_Production but it
doesn't have a clear focus (pun not intended). It starts out with
discussing satellite TV and has long sections on file formats in
different operating systems.
There is a help page on Commons for converting video to the Ogg
Theora format, but that is only the last step in a long chain.
Given that video is new, how can we find and rate videos, nominate
"good/featured videos", and give advice on how to improve quality?
Is the Commons village pump enough for this? Commons has a
separate graphics village pump. Do we also need a separate video
village pump?
Current digital video cameras use hard disks or memory cards,
instead of tape cassettes. Many new models cost less than 300
euro (or dollars), some as little as 120 euro (memory card perhaps
not included). Some have a special "Youtube mode", and I guess
that kind of usage is what drives the price down. What models are
good, and what should one watch out for?
We can find free still photos on Flickr and copy them to Commons.
Is there somewhere we can find free videos and copy them? Yes, at
the Internet Archive. Somewhere else?

Update regarding the court case Reiss Engelhorn Museum vs Wikimedia Commons user. The lawsuit concerns copyright claims related to 17 images of the museum’s public domain works of art, which have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first
feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited
to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community
[1][2] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing.
***If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons
around the second week of January, 2019.***
Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily
translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and
curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the
UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons.
Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires
only a few steps.

Hello dear Wikidata community,
After the success of the first WikidataCon in 2017
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2017> and many
conversations regarding the future of this conference, we are now ready to
announce that the WikidataCon 2019 will take place on October 25th-26th
2019 in Berlin.
Apart from this first piece of information (save the date in your
calendars!), there are some important changes regarding the goal of the
conference that we would like to share with you.
After its first iteration, the goals of the conference will evolve. The
event will be more focused on networking and strategic discussions. The
target group will of course include the Wikidata community in its broad
sense, especially people and organizations who are already involved in
editing, structuring and reusing the data, but will also reach further the
organizations who may be interested in using Wikidata and Wikibase, or
contributing in various ways to the evolution of Wikidata.
The program will be adapted to this new goal, and organized around
different levels of involvement for the participants: from being inspired
(with keynotes, success stories, vision of Wikidata’s future) to diving
deeper into the hot topics, but also action: the participants will have the
opportunity to work on projects during the conference.
Besides many possible topics that will be submitted by the participants, we
plan to have a dedicated track about lexicographical data, discussing the
perspectives for further reusing data about words within and beyond
Wikidata.
A lot of space will be left for discussions, networking, building
connections between the different stakeholders and members of the broad
Wikidata community.
The conference will be hosting at least 250 participants. In order to make
sure that the access to the conference is fair and to not reproduce the
issues of last year (rush to get a ticket and long waiting list), we will
set up a more streamlined registration process, where a committee made up
of both staff and volunteers will make sure that the applicants will
contribute in one way or another to the goal of the conference. I will keep
you updated for the next steps of this process.
