Staff

Mandy Henk, Public Lead

Mandy is a librarian, writer, and advocate for a healthy and vibrant Commons. She was named a 2012 Library Journal Mover and Shaker for her work as a founding member of the People’s Library at Occupy Wall Street, and is the author of Economy, Ecology, Equity: The Path to a Carbon Neutral Library (ALA Editions 2014).

Elizabeth Heritage, Communications Lead

Elizabeth is the Communications Lead at Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand, and manages communications with stakeholders.

Advisory Panel

The Creative Commons Aotearoa New Zealand Advisory Panel provides advice to the CCANZ project and links back to stakeholders. You can find minutes of the Panel’s quarterly meetings here. Panel members are appointed for a two-year term. The Chair is appointed for a single four-year term.

Rachel Hamilton-Williams (Business and Technology)

Rachel started Katipo Communications Ltd in 1995. Among their best-known products is Koha, an open-source library management system that has had significant NZ and international adoption. Rachel has wide experience in the tech sector. She is also currently applying her skills in the local government and not-for profit sectors.

Paula Eskett (Education)

Paula is a Knowledge Curator at CORE Education. She is passionate about open education and has completed Creative Commons’ international Institute of Open Leadership programme.

Mark Crookston (Government)

Mark is the Principal Advisor, Government Information Management and Use at Archives NZ Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga. He was instrumental in developing the collection use and reuse policy at the National and Alexander Turnbull Libraries, which follows the principles of Open GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums).

Jonathan Ball (Community)

Jonathan is a Content Acquisition Analyst for HERE Maps. He assesses government datasets for potential use in HERE products and will be representing the CC ‘end user’ community.

Victoria Leachman (GLAM)

Victoria is the Rights Advisor for the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa) and helps promote good copyright practices to New Zealand’s GLAM sector as a member of the Expert Knowledge Exchange programme run by National Services | Te Paerangi. Victoria is instrumental in making high resolution images of Te Papa’s collection available for use and reuse using either Creative Commons licensing or the No Known Copyright Restrictions rights statement via Te Papa’s Collections Online database.

OER Foundation Representative

Dr Wayne Mackintosh, Open Educational Resources Foundation

Wayne is the founding Director of the OER Foundation and the International Centre for Open Education based at Otago Polytechnic, New Zealand. Wayne also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the OER Foundation and holds the Commonwealth of Learning Chair in OER at Otago Polytechnic.

Andrew Matangi, Buddle Findlay

A consultant with Buddle Findlay, Andrew specialises in intellectual property, information and communications technology (ICT) and commercial contracts.

Richard Best, Best + Hancock

Richard is a sole practitioner at Best + Hancock. He specialises in technology, commercial and public law as well as public sector procurement.

Professor Susy Frankel, Victoria University of Wellington

Susy is a Professor of the Faculty of Law and Director of the New Zealand Centre of International Economic Law at Victoria University of Wellington. Susy is Chair of the Copyright Tribunal (NZ). Her publications include the treatise Intellectual Property In New Zealand (2nd Ed, Lexis Nexis, 2011).

Paul Sumpter, University of Auckland

An intellectual property specialist, Paul is the author of Intellectual Property Principles in Practice, Trade Marks in Practice and a co-author of Copyright and Design. He is member of the Copyright Tribunal of New Zealand (since 2004) and is a consultant to the national law firm Chapman Tripp.

Melanie Johnson, University of Auckland

Melanie is the Copyright Officer at the University of Auckland.

Volunteers

Richard White, Dunedin

Richard White Richard is the copyright officer at the University of Otago Te Whare Wānanga o Otāgo. He is also a CC-licensing musician, performing under the pseudonym mermaidguitar.

Anton Angelo, Christchurch

Anton works at the University of Canterbury Library as the repository manager, and also helps out with policy relating to copyright and scholarly publishing.

Norman Mailer, Hamilton / Bay of Plenty

Originally from Edinburgh, Norrie has worked across various aspects of education in several countries for over 25 years. For the last 18+ years, Norrie has worked in the educational publishing and content provision space in NZ and most recently have moved into educational technology and content provision within the NZ school sector.

Claire Buist, Queenstown

Claire Buist is Associate Principal at Shotover Primary School. She is keen to ensure that teachers, school leaders and Boards of Trustees have a clear understanding and beliefs around intellectual property and the sharing of copyright works.

William Mckee, Hamilton

William grew up in Levin, and currently lives in Hamilton. An artist by training, William now spends his time writing Python scripts, and is interested in game development, photography, life drawing and linux. He has a passion for education – especially Early Childhood Education.

Richard McLaren, Christchurch

Richard leads eLearning at Shirley Boys’ High School and is dipping his toes into the waters of Creative Commons.

Odette Murdoch, Dunedin

Odette Murdoch, Online Learning Designer at Otago Polytechnic, enjoys creating engaging and relevant learning material for a diverse range of learners. Odette has previously worked as a primary school and ESL teacher both in New Zealand and overseas.

Alan Curtis, Regional Facilitator, Auckland

Alan has over 24 years experience working with schools in governance and has considerable experience in the role and objectives of boards of trustees. He is currently serving on two establishment boards and filling a number of special adviser roles for different schools. He is also providing board training through the NZ School Trustees training programme.

Jack Tolley, Regional Facilitator, Auckland

Jack is a workshop coordinator who has worked for a range of social enterprise and nonprofit organisations. He is currently facilitating in Auckland, independently and for technology organisations Enspiral and Loomio.

Melissa Laing, Regional Facilitator, Auckland

Melissa is an artist, writer, curator and educator, with experience in both primary and tertiary education and a PhD from the Sydney College of Arts at the University of Sydney. She has worked in New Zealand, Australia and Europe.

Tanya Gray, Regional Facilitator, Auckland

Tanya is the lead presenter for the Gather Workshops team, who provide introductory programming workshops to teachers and schools.

Simon Kong, Regional Facilitator, Christchurch

Simon is a technical producer based in Christchurch.

Stephen McConnachie, Regional Facilitator, Christchurch

Stephen is the E-Learning Coordinator and a Mathematics teacher for Middleton Grange School. He was also Team Manager for the New Zealand International Mathematical Olympiad 2011-2013, and regularly runs professional development on e-learning within his school, around Canterbury and occasionally across New Zealand.
