Portrait of architect James Johnson Shuttleworth (1853 - 1929)

James Johnson Shuttleworth was an architect who built the grand house 'Lauriston' in Ryde in the 1880s. Lauriston was demolished in 1959. Shuttleworth's great-grand parents were the convicts Ann Thorn and James Shepherd who married in 1795. In 1794 Ann Thorn received a grant of land and established the large estate 'Thorn Farm' at Meadowbank, Ryde.
