This photograph depicts members of Oregon, USA's Multnomah Amateur Athletic Association, at a Movietone event on board SS SIERRA on 8 August 1929. The photograph was taken at Circular Quay during the welcoming and celebrations of the arrival of Australia's first Movietone News truck. The American baseballers arrived to play a series of games against Australian teams from South Australia, Sydney and Victoria. In the back row, left to right is: V Jacobberger, K Sax, F Helmcke, G Storry, G Sherrett and H Moore. In the front row, left to right is: H Dillon, R Grayson, B Mimmaugn, R Davis and M Grayson.
This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
