First Officer Ray Milton Sterling standing next to the ship's wheel of E R STERLING, c 1916

This photograph depicts American shipowner Captain Edward Robert Sterling's son Ray Milton Sterling, probably standing on board E R STERLING, near the ship's wheel. The gold braids on his sleeve suggests that he held the rank of first officer. A New South Wales passenger list dated 5 July 1916, listed E R Sterling as the ship's captain and Ray Sterling as First Officer. By 1923, Ray Sterling had risen to captain of the E R STERLING.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
