Gladys Moncrieff at a premiere at Prince Edward Theatre in Sydney, 28 March 1936

This photograph depicts the Australian opera singer Gladys Moncrieff attending the premiere of 'Rose of the Rancho' at the Prince Edward Theatre in Sydney on 28 March 1936. On 4 April 1936, 'The Australian Women's Weekly' reported on the event and noted the singing sensation's appearance:

 

'Our own fine singer, Gladys Moncrieff, in orchid chiffon with huge spray of lily-of-the-valley at the shoulder, among appreciative audience.'

 

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
