German naval officers and officials at 'Ye Olde Crusty Cellars' in George Street, Sydney

This image depicts officers and visitors enjoying wine at Leo Buring's 'Ye Olde Crusty Cellars' on 255 George Street in Sydney. The man in the centre and seated (to left of the large bottle) is Captain Otto Schniewind (later Generaladmiral), commander of KOLN. The man to his right is German Consul-General, Dr Rudolf Asmis. The photograph was taken during the German Navy's visit in May 1933.

 

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
