LIZZIE under sail in Sydney Harbour

The vessel in this image has a name on the bow that may read LIZZIE. The photograph provides a portside of a deep hulled boat with a small sail. The registration number LFB406 (LFB = Licensed Fishing Boat) is also visible on its bow. One crew member can be seen at the helm and a dinghy trails from the stern. Part of the Hall collection acquired from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. This image may be the earliest recorded picture of a Sydney Harbour commercial fishing boat.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William J Hall collection. The Hall collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races.
