ABC Military Band playing with ABC commentator on a vessel, 1933-1951

This photograph probably depicts the Australian Broadcasting Commission 22-piece Military Band (also known as the National Military Band) with a conductor, possibly Stephen Yorke, performing on board a small vessel with an Australian Broadcasting Commission commentator. A Royal Australian Navy heavy cruiser - either HMAS AUSTRALIA or HMAS CANBERRA - can be seen in the distance.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
