Portrait of Captain W M Jermyn on board SS LARGS BAY, 1929-1936

This photograph depicts Captain W M Jermyn on board the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line's SS LARGS BAY. Jermyn was in command of the vessel from 1929 to his retirement in 1936. By the time he became captain of LARGS BAY, he had served over 40 years with the Aberdeen Line and under his command had carried over 38,000 troops over a distance of 320,000 miles during World War II.

 

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
