James Johnson, DUNBAR shipwreck survivor
This is an original silver gelatin photograph of James Johnson, the sole survivor of the DUNBAR shipwreck. It is mounted in an oval cut board and bears the marks of the photographic studio, Telsa. On 20 August 1857 in conditions of poor visibility the DUNBAR collided with a cliff near South Head, Sydney. The wreck resulted in the deaths of 121 people who were mostly established residents of Sydney. Johnson was rescued from the cliff face two days after the ship wrecked and became a known personality in the colony.
