David Moore

by Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons

David Moore (1927 - 2003) was one of Australia's most respected and experienced photojournalists.

Moore was educated at Geelong Grammar and spent 18 months in the navy during the mid-1940s. Returning to civilian life in 1946 he secured a position in the commerical photography studio of Russell Roberts and later, Max Dupain.

The period that Moore spent working at Dupain's studio in Clarence Street was clearly influential, however in 1951 Moore declined the offer of a promotion in order to travel and gain experience internationally.

Over the next three decades Moore established a career as a photojournalist working for publications such as 'National Geographic' and 'Life' and travelling all over the world.

Moore was instrumental in establishing the Australian Centre for Photography and for promoting photography as a legitimate art form.
