General Note: One of the nation's prominent educators and civil rights leaders, Bethune's political career included appointments to the National Youth Administration by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and as a delegate to the founding conference of the United Nations by President Harry S. Truman. She established a school for girls in Daytona Beach that later became Bethune-Cookman College.
