Maj. Gen. Charles F. Bolden, Jr

Nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, retired Marine Corps Major General Charles Frank Bolden, Jr. was appointed NASA’s twelth Administrator on July 17, 2009. Bolden’s career with NASA began when he was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1980. He flew on a number of Space Shuttle missions, piloting STS-61C and STS-31 and commanding STS-45 and STS-60, and also held a number of technical positions within the agency. Bolden received his bachelor's degree in electrical science from the United States Naval Academy and his master's in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
