Mariner 5 Launch

The Mariner 5 spacecraft was the fifth in a series of spacecraft designed to explore planets in flyby mode. Mariner 5 was originally a backup spacecraft for Mariner 4, but was refurbished for a flyby mission of Venus after the success of that mission. Its primary objectives were to pass within 2000 km of Venus and provide data on the planet's atmosphere, its radiation and magnetic field environment, and the interplanetary environment before and after planetary encounter. This is an image of the Mariner 5 launch from Cape Canaveral.
