STS-8 Launch
(August 30, 1983) NASA's eighth space shuttle launch lit up the Florida sky at 2:32 a.m. EDT on August 30, 1983. The space shuttle Challenger's third flight was the first to take off in darkness. Crew members included astronauts Richard H. Truly, STS-8 commander; Daniel C. Brandenstein, pilot; and Dale A. Gardner, Guion S. Bluford and William E. Thornton, all mission specialists. The crew returned to Earth on September 5, 1983.
