Von Karman Vortices

This spectacular view of the von Karman vortices off the Atlantic coast of Africa was taken by the crew of Shuttle mission STS-107 on January 18, 2003. Photographed from an altitude of 146 nautical miles or 270 kilometers, Space Shuttle Columbia was on its 29th orbit of the mission. The precise nadir point is located at 12.7 degrees north latitude and 27.8 degrees west longitude.
