Starshine 2 Deployment
A small satellite called STARSHINE 2 is deployed from a canister in the payload bay of the Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-108) at 10 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time) on Sunday, December 16, 2001. More than 30,000 students from 660 schools in 26 countries were scheduled to track STARSHINE 2 as it orbited Earth. The students, who helped polish the satellite's 845 mirrors, used the information they collected to calculate the density of Earth's upper atmosphere. Starshine 2 re-entered Earth's atmosphere on May 5, 2002.
