Dawn Spacecraft Leaving Earth (Artist's Concept)
Artist's concept of the Dawn spacecraft leaving Earth. Launched September 27, 2007, Dawn's mission was to learn more about the formation and makeup of the early solar system by studying objects in the asteroid belt. Dawn reached and orbited protoplanet Vesta in 2011-2012 and then went on to Ceres. It is the first mission to have been planned to orbit two objects in our solar system.
