Gemini ATDA
The Gemini Augmented Target Docking Adapter (ATDA), which was planned to be the rendezvous and docking vehicle on the Gemini IX-A spaceflight, undergoes a preflight checkout in the Kennedy Space Center's Cryogenic Building before launch. The ATDA was being used because the Agena Target Vehicle failed to achieve orbit when launched on May 17, 1966. This caused the postponement of the Gemini IX-A launch. After several more delays astronauts Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan launced on Gemini IX on June 3, 1966. When the finally met up with the ATDA they discovered that the payload fairing that protected the ATDA during launch had not completely separated - and was stuck partially opened around the ATDA. The astronauts noted that it looked like an "angry alligator." The plan to practice docking and carry out various maneuvers was scrubbed.
