The countenance of astronaut candidate Christina M. Hammock (now Koch) signals her success at fire-starting, a technique that will help sustain her in the wilderness. As the first phase of their extensive training program along the way to become full-fledged astronauts, the eight astronaut candidates of the class of 2013 spent three days in the wild participating in their land survival training, near Rangeley, Maine.
