Astronaut Frank Caldeiro with Discovery
Astronaut Fernando (Frank) Caldeiro poses in front of the orbiter Discovery as it rolls out of KSC's Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 2 en route to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). Once inside the VAB, Discovery would be hoisted upright into a vertical position to be mated with an orange external tank and two white solid rocket boosters. This roll-out was for the launch of STS-91, the ninth and final docking mission with the Russian Space Station Mir. The six-member crew of STS-91 docked with Mir and picked up Mission Specialist Andrew Thomas, Ph.D., who was on Mir for about four months. STS-91 launched June 2, 1998 and landed June 12, 1998.
