STS-6 on Approach to Edwards Air Force Base

This picture was taken as space shuttle Challenger approached Runway 22 at Edwards Air Force Base for landing at the end of mission STS-6 on April 9, 1983. As Challenger lined up on final approach, mission specialist Donald H. Peterson stretched behind the pilot seats with a 35 mm still camera to snap this rare picture. Challenger landed seconds later.

STS-6 was commanded by astronaut Paul J. Weitz. The pilot was astronaut Karol J. Bobko. Dr. F. Story Musgrave and Peterson were the mission specialists on the mission.
