Two Spaceflight Legends

At the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia, record-setting NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson (left) shares a lighthearted moment with cosmonaut Alexey Leonov, the first human to walk in space. At the time Whitson was a backup crewmember for International Space Station Expeditions 48/49. She and other crewmembers were preparing to depart for their launch site at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on June 24, 2016. Prime crewmembers Kate Rubins of NASA, Anatoly Ivanishin of Roscosmos and Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched July 7 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on the Soyuz MS-01 spacecraft for a four-month mission on the International Space Station that wrapped up at the end of October 2016.
