NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter's First Flight
In this image from a video captured by the Mastcam-Z camera aboard NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, the Ingenuity helicopter makes its historic first flight—the first instance of powered, controlled flight on another planet. The video is available at photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA24583
Designed to be a technology demonstration that would make no more than five test flights in 30 days, the Ingenuity helicopter eventually completed 72 flights in just under 3 years. Its mission was completed on January 25, 2024.
