Gemini V Astronauts L. Gordon Cooper Jr. and Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr.
Command pilot L. Gordon Cooper Jr. and spaceflight rookie Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr. are shown inside the Gemini V spacecraft in the white room atop Pad 19 moments prior to the closing of the hatches. They began their mission on August 21, 1965, spending eight days in space, a new spaceflight duration world record, and the length of time it was expected to take to fly to the Moon, land, and return. The longer flight was made possible by innovative new fuel cells installed in the spacecraft.
