GOES-A Prepares for Launch

At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite A GOES-A was encapsulated inside its payload fairing aboard a Delta rocket at Complex 17. GOES-A was launched by the Kennedy Space Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on October 16, 1975.

Once in geostationary orbit over the Indian Ocean, GOES-A was renamed GOES-1. GOES-1 returned its first image of the Earth on October 25, 1975, nine days after launch.
