Gemini V Pilot Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr.

Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper Jr. took this photograph of his crewmate Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr. during their record-breaking 7.9-day spaceflight in the Gemini V spacecraft. Lifting off from Cape Canaveral at 9:00 a.m. (EST), the two astronauts doubled America's spaceflight record—set two months earlier—and tested technologies that would be needed to successfully land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade.
