6x19-Inch Transonic Tunnel

(1970-L-03098): Building 585 is the cylindrical, steel enclosure for the 6- by-19-Inch Transonic Tunnel. The structure’s external appearance offers few clues to suggest that it houses the fourth incarnation of a historic wind tunnel. Note the vertical air reservoirs installed to replace the VDT’s pressure vessel that served as this tunnel’s original reservoir. Building 580 on the right originally housed Langley’s first wind tunnel, but it is now an Air Force office building.
