Apollo 15

by NASA on The Commons

Apollo 15 was the first of the longer, expedition-style lunar landing missions, the first to include the lunar rover, and the first not to land in a lunar mare. The extended duration of the stay on the Moon allowed for more time to be dedicated to scientific studies than during the previous missions. As Astronaut Alfred M. Worden orbited the Moon in the Command Module, Astronauts David R. Scott and James B. Irwin collected 173 pounds of moon rocks, including one of the prize artifacts of the Apollo program, a sample of ancient lunar crust called the "Genesis Rock."
