Armorial binding from the library of King George III

This 18th century binding of green calf is stamped in gold with the English royal coat of arms. Two slits in the leather at the fore-edge of the upper and lower covers provide evidence of former ties. The cipher of George III is gold tooled into the spine compartments. The text edges are gilt.

 

Bequest of Percy Watts Rule (1889-1953) of Timaru. Formerly owned by Benjamin Hibbard (1834-1912) also of Timaru.
