Mixing printing blocks and photographs in poster design

ca. 1910, Offset lithograph, on sheet 852 x 537 mm, Ephemera Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library, Reference: Eph-E-CABOT-Circus-Ridgway-1910-01

Ridgways was one of the first circuses Cabot worked with. As a newly married couple, the Cabots travelled with the circus by horse and cart. The tour lasted from August to October 1912, going from the Nelson area down the west coast, through the Otira Gorge up over Arthurs Pass to inland Canterbury and around the Canterbury rural towns.

The poster uses a combination of engravings and photolithographs, and shows portraits of the performer Gertrude Emery, two acrobats, Will and Chas Ridgway, and W Cole, with engravings of a lady juggler standing on horseback, various horse and chariot teams, performing acrobatic dogs, and a pair of clowns Doyle & Dinny.
