Highland gas sentry reading a letter from home

Soldier reading his letter, during World War I. A kilted soldier is half leaning and half sitting on a muddy embankment. The surroundings are a little disorientating but there may be a dugout on the right of the picture. There are lots of boards and supports to be seen here, as well as the gas attack alarm. The soldier is completely absorbed by and engrossed in his letter, sitting in the sunshine. John Warwick Brooke is thought to have taken this.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. Highland gas sentry reading a letter from home. Note the gas alarm near at hand.']
