Va. Guard Aviators load out for Guatemala humanitarian mission
Soldiers from the Sandston-based 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment load two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters onto a C-5 Galaxy March 27, 2014, at Richmond International Airport for transport to Guatemala for Operation Beyond the Horizon. Approximately 110 Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers will support the joint foreign military interaction and humanitarian exercise sponsored by U.S. Southern Command. From the beginning of April to the end of June, personnel are scheduled to rotate in and out of country in two-week cycles. While there, the aviators will act as the sole rotary wing aviation asset, providing casualty evacuation support and gaining familiarity with unique terrain that includes active volcanoes and high altitudes.
