Kobernik takes command of Winchester-based 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment

Maj. Kurt K. Kobernik takes command of the Virginia National Guard's Winchester-based 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Lt. Col. Erik T. Gordon during a ceremony Dec. 5, 2014, in Winchester, Va. Col. William J. Coffin, commander of the 116th IBCT, presided over the exchange of unit colors that signified the change of command. The ceremony was also the last official act for Command Sgt. Maj. Alan M. Ferris as the battalion's senior noncommissioned officer as Ferris now serves as the Virginia National Guard Senior Enlisted Advisor. During the ceremony, Gordon and Ferris added the Iraqi Surge and Global War on Terror campaign streamers to the unit's organizational colors for the battalion's service in Iraq and Kuwait from 2007 to 2008. After the ceremony, Coffin presented both Gordon and Ferris with the Meritorious Service Medal to recognize their many accomplishments leading the battalion. While he was in command, Gordon served full time in the operations and training section of the 29th Infantry Division and will return to National Guard Bureau where he has been selected to serve as the chief of installations division.
