Camp Pendleton, local community come together for Earth Day activities

More than a dozen students from Beach Montessori Christian Academy join Sailors, Marines and Virginia National Guard Soldiers for a full day of activities in honor of Earth Day April 22, 2015, at the Virginia National Guard’s Camp Pendleton Collective Training Center in Virginia Beach. In addition to picking up garbage and debris, the students planted butterfly gardens at two different locations on Camp Pendleton and enjoyed lunch on the beach. Earth Day is an international event promoting environmental protection which was first held on April 22, 1970. The campaign for Earth Day began as a grassroots effort to teach about environmental stewardship, create an awareness of the environment’s fragility, and ultimately, develop awareness into American society. Annual celebrations since then have rallied more than 20 million Americans, including members of the National Guard, to become involved in environmental awareness activities. (Photo by Master Sgt.
