Va. Guard Soldier honored for lifesaving actions

Sgt. 1st Class Sammy Jones (left), a military police instructor with the Virginia Army National Guard's Fort Pickett-based 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute, is honored with a Lifesaving Award at the third annual Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Valor Awards April 24, 2014, in Portsmouth, Va. The ceremony provided the Hampton Roads business community with the opportunity to thank and recognize public safety personnel who risk their lives every day to keep their community safe. Jones, an auxiliary police officer with the Portsmouth Police Department, was recognized for his actions in saving a man's life in May 2014. Jones arrived at a scene where a man was threatening to commit suicide. The man was an Army veteran who was under the care of the Veterans Administration and had gone off his medications, according to Jones. Jones talked the man down from the window and helped him receive treatment. (Photo by Master Sgt. A.J. Coyne, Virginia National Guard Public Affairs)
