Thunder Soldiers fire retiring guns for the last time

Soldiers of Hanover-based Battery A, 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team conduct one last live-fire exercise with their M119A2 howitzers Nov. 5, 2016, at Fort Pickett, Va. The artillery guns will be traded in for new digital M119A3 howitzers as the regiment transforms into a larger, more robust field artillery unit. Brig. Gen. Walter L. Mercer, Virginia National Guard Assistant Adjutant General – Army, fired one of the last rounds for one of the retiring howitzers while visiting the artillery troops. Cadets of Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program at North Carolina’s Elizabeth City State University received a field artillery orientation from artillery officers, including 2nd Lt. Erin Noble, the first female fire direction officer in the Virginia Army National Guard. (National Guard photo by Sgt. JoAnna Greene/Released)
