Roanoke parade honors Virginia's veterans

Virginia's Veterans Parade honors the service of men and women in the armed forces Nov. 5, 2016, in Roanoke, Virginia. Brig. Gen. Lapthe Flora, Virginia National Guard Assistant Adjutant General for Strategic Initiatives, joined local residents and members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets at the Veteran Meet and Greet held at the City Market Building before the parade. Sgt. John Kessler, a Word War II veteran who landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day with the 29th Infantry Division, was among the attendees. Flora, a native of Roanoke, helped organize the parade that is now in its seventh year and recognized as one of the largest veterans events in the state. The Clifton Forge-based 29th Division Band provided ceremonial music before the parade and played the national anthem. (Photo by Cotton Puryear, Virginia National Guard Public Affairs)
