Historic artillery battery reactivated in Hampton
The Virginia National Guard reactivates Battery C, 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during a ceremony held Jan. 7, 2017, in Hampton, Virginia. The reactivation is part of 1st Battalion's ongoing transformation, and more information is available at go.usa.gov/x9PfW. Battery C was organized in August 1807 and was designated "The Portsmouth Light Artillery." It participated in every conflict the U. S. was engaged in from the War of 1812 to World War II as well as nine months of service on Mexican Border during the Mexican Expedition in 1916. It became part of the 29th Division at Camp McClellan before deploying to France during World War I as part of the 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, and the battery continued to be part of the 29th ID in World War II.
