Mercer retires after more than 35 years of service

Senior Virginia National Guard leaders, family and friends gather for Brig. Gen. Walter L. Mercer's retirement ceremony July 14, 2018, at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia. Mercer retires after more than 35 years of military service, but he will continue to serve in a civilian position as the Chief Operating Officer for the Virginia Department of Military Affairs. Earlier in the day, Brig. Gen. Lapthe C. Flora succeeded Mercer as the Assistant Adjutant General – Army and took charge of the Virginia Army National Guard in a change of responsibility ceremony.
